Candice: the travelling photographer

Welcome to my blog

The purpose of this blog is to share some of the experiences I have had whilst travelling to a different country each year to photograph it. My first destination was South Africa, I hope you enjoy my travels.

Where to next?

I have decided that my next journey will be to Vietnam.  I have been inspired by Charlie Boorman's By Any Means documentary.  For those of you who haven't seen it, it's well worth a watch - but I warn you, if you are anything like me you may just start planning your next trip....

African Safari

Yet another journal entry...

"Today was the most amazing day!  We spend 4 hours driving around the reserve when we came across a family of baboons, they were making an unbelievable noise.  I wondered what was going on when all of a sudden out of the corner of my eye I saw a cheetah run and pounce on a baboon.  It all happened in the blink of an eye, there was a cloud of dust and a scattering of animals.  The baboon got away in the end.  As we were turning to go a tour bus pulled up along side us and we told the guide what had happened.  He said that he had been working there for 8 years in the hope of seeing what we just saw.  Sadly he missed it by about a minute - he was so disappointed."

No one breathe!

"Today we came across a mother and baby Rhino. They were so close I dared not breathe. It was breathtaking! We watched as the mother lay down to feed her little one."
I have been uploading photographs of my recent trip to South Africa on to Flickr and came across a journal entry which I was unable to post due to the remote location.  I thought I might post it now...

"I woke up this morning to the smell of the African bush.  Yesterday we travelled for 5 hours and are now in the heart of Umfolozi Game Reserve.  We are camping at Mpila camp site in the middle of the reserve, I had a rather rough night as it's not fenced in and the Rondavels (African huts) we are staying in has no locks on the doors.  Last night we had a braai (bbq) in the bush and as night fell things began to stir.  The braai area was about 50 metres from the bush and when I shone a light out into the wilderness I was shocked to see many sets of eyes shining back at me - hyena's I was told.  Judging by the number of footprints outside our huts in the morning, they weren't mistaken.

It's taken me a day or two to settle down and get used to my surroundings, the local warthog is now my buddy although he is known to be rather fiesty at times.  Today we are on the hunt for lions, will keep you updated...."

Rovos train derailment

I just found out that the Rovos train (a luxury train running from Pretoria to Cape Town, South Africa) has derailed.  What a tragedy!
